The main Niavaran Palace had been closed for extensive renovation and the installation of security systems. Masud Sharifi, the director of the Niavaran Cultural Complex, listed some of the items that were worked on during that time: repair and upgrade of the air conditioning system, doors, fences and elevators, and a fresh coat of paint and finishing.
The palace is located in northern Tehran and consists of several buildings and a museum. The main Niavaran Palace was completed in 1968 and was designed by Mohsen Forughi, an Iranian architect. It is two stories tall and spreads across a park-like setting. It houses 300 priceless tableaus, decorative items and statues.
The royal automobile museum and the historical document and studies center will be re-opening in the first six months of the Iranian new year, which starts March 21.
The Niavaran Palace complex used to be Nasireddin Shah’s garden in the 19th Century. He erected the original Niavaran Palace, later renamed the Sahebqraniyeh Palace.
While Mohammad Reza Shah was in power, all of the palaces’ peripheral buildings but the Ahmad-Shahi Pavilion (or Kushk-e Ahmad-Shahi) were demolished.
