The Taliban rulers of Afghanistan have opened the floodgates of the Kamal Khan Dam and allowed the waters of the Helmand River to flow into Iran’s Sistan va Baluchestan province for the first time in years, the daily Javan, affiliated with the Pasdaran, has reported. But days later, Afghanistan’s Herat News quoted the Taliban minister of water as saying the Iranian report was nonsense and water had been released from the dam’s reservoir only for the use of Afghan farmers. Which report was true? A few weeks later, Iranian farmers in the area of the river gathered to protest the absence of water.
