A bride was accidentally shot to death just moments after getting married as an over-enthusiastic wedding guest fired off shots in celebration.
The bride, Mahvash Leghaei, was 24 years old. The gunman was reported to be a cousin of the groom. The bullet came from an unlicensed hunting rifle and passed through the bride’s head before hitting and injuring two male guests.
The wedding was in Firuzabad.
Firing celebratory shots at weddings is a common occurrence among some tribes in Iran, but is against the law.
After the bride’s death, her organs were donated to three recipients. Her uncle said she had decided to become an organ donor only months before.
Police said the shooter was a 36-year-old man who had “poor control over his weapon.” The police said he fled the scene after seeing what he had done, but was soon apprehended.
Press reports said the bride was a recent graduate with a psychology degree who was employed as a social worker helping drug addicts.
