The Majlis is considering a bill that would encourage political parties to run slates of candidates and end the current rather confused system of candidates running as individuals while seeking endorsements from major Reformist or Conservative groups.
The Mehr news agency said a Majlis committee approved the bill and sent it to the Presiding Board of the legislature Monday to be scheduled for floor action.
The bill states that a group would have to have 300 members and organizations in two-thirds of the country’s 31 provinces in order to be recognized as a legitimate party.
The parties would then present their lists of candidates for president, Majlis deputies and city council members.
The draft includes a provision outlining those who are barred from parties.
The 12-man Council of Guardians would still retain its power to review all candidacies and rule out candidates.
