Obama has signed a letter renewing the executive order imposing the first sanctions on Iran back in November 1979. Many media in Iran focused on the wording that said, “Our relations with Iran have not yet returned to normal,” and saw that as some sort of signal of hostility. Actually, that is just the wording used every year for a third of century as the order is renewed annually. And it is chiefly renewed to protect the small quantity of Iranian assets still frozen in this country—assets like the embassy building in Washington—frozen so that people who have won suits against Iran cannot seize them.
