Brig. Gen. Masud Jazayeri, a deputy chief of the Joint Staff of the military, who is best known for spinning conspiracy theories, charged last week that the independence referendum planned for late this month in the Kurdish region of Iraq, is all an American plot aimed at disintegrating the countries of the region. Before he spoke out, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson telephoned the leadership of the Iraqi Kurdish region asking them to call off the referendum, and US Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford visited the region to convey the same message.
