Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi says the “Lost Paradise” of Makran must be transformed into the future economic hub of Iran and the region.
Addressing the 8th Indian Ocean Conference underway in Oman, Araqchi said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has placed Makran is ‘lost paradise’ a ‘maritime-oriented’ policy at the forefront of its strategic development.”
“A country with over 5,800 kilometers of coastline –4,900 kilometers of which stretch across the south along this vast ocean– cannot remain indifferent to its future,” he added. “Developing a maritimebased economy is not just an option for Iran; it is an imperative,” he said.
His emphasis on the Makran coast links with President Pezeshkian’s frequent references to moving Iran’s capital from Tehran to a point on the Makran coast, which lies on the shores of the Gulf of Oman.
