In a surprising admission, Iran’s second biggest carmaker, SAIPA, has announced that 44 percent of the value of its cheapest car, the Pride, must be imported, the Financial Tribune has revealed. SAIPA made the announcement as part of bragging that it had recently reduced the value volume of imported parts from 56 percent to 44 percent of the sales price of about 400 million rials ($3,500). This announcement is in sharp contrast with the claim last year that only 13 percent of the Pride was imported. Iranian manufacturers regularly tout how few imported components they use.
