Ahmad Shaheed of the Maldives as “a liar.” Larijani complained that many Arab countries have never held a free election, while Iran had held dozens over three decades, yet the UN human rights watchdog never says anything about those other countries. That might have something to do with the fact the UN human rights council assays human rights, not democratic practices. Larijani also said that Iran had erroneously joined such agreements as the UN Universal Declaration on Human Rights, which he said was too focused on “liberal values.” He said it was astonishing that anyone in the West who denies the Holocaust goes to jail while no one who insults the prophets has anything done to them.
