The US Interior Department has told the two Park Police officers who killed Bijan Ghaisar that it plans to fire them.
It acted only days after a federal judge said the County of Fairfax in Virginia, where Ghaisar was killed, could not try them for murder because they were federal officers acting in the line of duty.
One pending question is whether the two men—Lucas Vinyard, 40, and Alejandro Amaya, 42—can be tried by Virginia if they are no longer officers of the US Park Police.
The police union, the Fraternal Order of Police, said the planned firing violated the terms of the union’s contract with the Park Police and said it would fight the effort to fire the pair.
