Foreign travel by Iranians is dropping precipitously, presumably because of higher exit taxes and the lower value of the rial. The government said the number of Iranians traveling abroad in Mehr (September 23-October 22) was down 67 percent compared to Mehr in the previous year. So far this Persian year, the main destinations of Iranians traveling abroad have been, in order of preference, Iraq, Turkey, UAE, Georgia, Germany, Qatar and Saudi Arabia—the first and last mainly as pilgrimage destinations.
