Vitaly Churkin (right), the very skilled Russian ambassador to the United Nations, said last week that the UN Security Council is simply not the appropriate place for discussing Iran’s nuclear issue. He did not say why, but it may because the Security Council involves 10 members from second tier states. At any rate, he said, “Iran’s nuclear issue should be discussed within the framework of the negotiations with the Group of 5+1,” which refers to the five permanent members of the Security Council (Russia, China, France, Britain and the United States) plus Germany. But two days later, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Salehi (left) said the group of 5+1 is not the right place to discuss Iran’s nuclear program. That, he said, should only be dealt with at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Glad we could get that problem resolved!
