Carrots, butter and tomatoes have seen outrageously high price hikes over the past year, according to the Statistical Center of Iran (SCI).
In its report on inflation issued for the 12-month period ending August 22, the SCI said national inflation over the 12 months ending August 22 came to 43.2 percent.
In its food and beverage category, the SCI monitors the costs of 53 items. The SCI reported that the cost of carrots over those 12 months rose an astounding 255.4 percent, the highest price boost for any food item.
In distant second and third places were butter, up 121.5 percent, and tomatoes, up 119.3 percent.
On the other hand, the SCI reported the price of oranges had fallen 4 percent over the 12 months.
The Financial Tribune reported that the coronavirus epidemic has prompted a three-fold rise in demand for carrots as many in the country view carrot juice as a cure for the coronavi-rus.
