Iran after going there for cosmetic surgery. The country has been heavily promoting itself as a place to go for inexpensive operations.
A British hairdresser who went to Iran for cosmetic surgery to improve her looks has died as a result of the operation, the London Daily Mail has reported.
It said Louise Smith, 37, was pursuing her career in the United Arab Emirates when she went to Iran for surgery. Her family members told the newspaper they are “in the dark” over the circumstances of her death July 28.
She was said to have become obsessed with her weight-gain during the coronavirus lockdown.
Her family complained that Iran delayed returning her body and it was four weeks after her death before the body reached England
The Iranian government has not yet said anything about Smith’s death.
Iran has made a major industry out of doing cosmetic surgeries for foreigners at cut-rate prices. It also has a goal of developing Iran as a site for “medical tourism.” The news of a death in cosmetic surgery could have a major impact on the country’s ability to attract foreign clients.
The Iranian Association of Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeons says about 40,000 operations take place in Iran each year but the Daily Mail said “the reality is probably three times that amount” because many undocumented specialist surgeons are willing to perform procedures others may not accept.
