An Agriculture Ministry official says Iran will become self-sufficient in the production of sugar, barley, beans and wheat within 10 years. If it becomes self-sufficient in wheat, it will be the third time it has done so in the history of the Islamic Republic. But the two previous instances of wheat self-sufficiency lasted only briefly. Self-sufficiency has been a revolutionary goal since the start of the regime, even though economists say it isn’t a rational goal.
