Iran’s biggest import by far this year is cellphones, which far outpace imports of such necessities as maize and wheat.
State broadcasting said that in the first eight months of the Persian year, 8 percent of all Iranian imports were cellphones, accounting for $2.5 billion. That was a jump of 111 percent from the cellphone imports in the same period last year.
There was no explanation for the sudden jump in cellphone imports by a country were almost everyone who can afford one already owns a cellphone. The government has taken no action to limit cellphone imports and stop the drain on foreign exchange.
The second largest import after cellphones is maize, of which $2 billion worth was imported in the first eight months of this year.
