In a speech to a conference on corruption, Pur-Mohammadi said his office had recently taken a poll and found that 98 percent of those surveyed said they were following news reports on the massive corruption scandal.
He said the poll showed that 75 percent of the public held the Ahmadi-nejad Administration responsible while 16 percent blamed the Judiciary.
He did not say if anyone had blamed the embezzlers for the embezzlement or even if that option was provided in the poll.
Pur-Mohammadi did not say why his office was taking polls on whom to blame when the courts are supposed to make those judgments. He also did not say on what basis the public made its judgments since little information has been released and the public knows little.
However, the scandal has become a huge political football with politicians generally blaming their opponents for the crime.
The fraud was first revealed in September and has been a very hot topic in Iran. The fraud apparently involves the issuance of improper letters of credit by several banks, which allowed the conspirators to buy up vast amounts of property, chiefly state firms being privatized.
