The Taliban, who get some clandestine support from Iran, are now the world’s deadliest terrorist group, according to the Global Terrorism Index, produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace in Australia. With the virtual demise of the Islamic State in 2019, the death toll attributed to the Taliban in 2018 was 6,108 or 38 percent of all the terrorist-caused deaths in that year. Iran is understood to provide the Taliban with limited supplies to help it harass the Americans in Afghanistan. But most of the deaths attributed to it are of Afghans. Shortly after the report came out, Iran flatly denied providing any aid whatsoever to the Taliban.
