Large numbers of people are lobbying the Belgian government not to send convicted terrorist Assadollah Assadi (photo) back to Iran under a new prisoner exchange agreement that Belgium has signed with Iran, arguing it will just encourage the Islamic Republic to take more hostages and send more terrorists to commit crimes in Europe. In one instance, 68 current and former EU and UN judges, special advisers and legal experts wrote, “Rather than helping to foster impunity in Iran by releasing a convicted terrorist, the Belgian government should unequivocally declare that Assadollah Assadi will not be released back to Iran.” That was followed by a letter making the same point and signed by 21 former cabinet ministers in EU countries, including four prime ministers, three defense ministers and two foreign ministers.
