One Afghan civilian was slightly injured in the exchange that continued intermittently for several hours in the Afghan province of Nimruz.
According to Pajhwok Afghan News, the clashes erupted after Afghan border police prevented Iranian border guards from digging a canal in an area they perceived to be inside Afghanistan.
An Afghan official told Pajhwok on condition of anonymity that Iranian border guards started firing at 1 p.m. on October 12 after the Afghan intervention. Following a brief pause at 3 p.m., the firing resumed at 4 p.m. and continued until 6.
Afghan Brig. Gen. Abduljabbar Purdali later confirmed the incident and the injury of the Afghan civilian.
The clashes come about a month after Afghanistan reported a similar exchange when Iranian border officials had attempted to set up a checkpoint and dig a canal inside Afghan territory.
On Oct. 4, the Afghan government dispatched a delegation of parliamentarians from the upper chamber led by the minister of border and tribal affairs to resolve the dispute.
The delegation also conducted an investigation into the September 14 incident and concluded that Iran had violated Afghan territory after Iranian guards crossed the border, disregarding a wall built to demarcate the border.
