An explosion and fire in a tunnel on the express-way being built from Tehran to the Caspian has killed at least three workers.
An unnamed official quoted by the Iran Free Press said the explosion was caused April 30 by a buildup of methane gas.
Three workers were killed and eight others injured, mainly suffering major burns. Another five workmen were believed trapped inside the tunnel when the walls collapsed in the explosion.
A rescue effort was launched to dig them out.
The tunnel is one of many being punched through the mountains in an effort to construct a more direct, speedier and safer highway link to the Caspian resorts.
The Tehran-North Highway has been under construction for three decades and is far behind schedule.
