replicating the American sanctions that deny US visas and freeze any American assets of sanctioned Iranian officials. Oddly, just as the Majlis approved the sanctions, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Mohammad Khazaee, sent a letter to the UN calling such American sanctions illegal. “The US Administration is behaving in a manner that few nations across the world could deny the fact that its main objective is to deprive the Iranian people of their most basic human rights, including the right of free movement,” he wrote. Surely, Khazaee knows that the doctrine of free movement mandates that a state allow its people to leave—a right the Islamic Republic does not grant—and does not mean that a country is required to admit any foreigner who wishes to enter—which the Islamic Republic also does not recognize as a right.
