As massive flooding has devastated parts of China and Europe, Iran has also been hit with spring (belated) flooding, although nothing on the scale of what has happened in Europe and China. At least 11 people have died across Iran in the deluges. One was killed by lightning and the others were swept away in flash floods (as above) in mid-July and early August. Widely scattered floods were reported in 61 or 13 percent of Iran’s 454 counties (bakhsh) in 10 of the country’s 31 provinces. Rainfall—but not flooding—has been notable in Sistan va Baluchistan province. Last winter, the province saw only 0.4 millimeters of rain. In the first month of this summer, it got 45 times that.
