The Majlis Budget Committee has approved raising welfare payments, which have been eroded by inflation to be almost meaningless, by more than half, which will still leave them as quite small payments.
Hadi Qavami, spokesman for the Budget Committee, said, if the Majlis as a whole approves the proposal, the monthly cash payments will rise to 720,000 rials ($5.30) per person as of Now Ruz.
The previous payment, set in 2010, was 455,000 rials per head, a sum that was worth more than $40 when it was set but is now worth a mere $3.40. The hike will amount to 58 percent.
