Thousands of Iranians (and tens of thousands of people from other countries) who won the US visa lottery last year are in danger of being shut out of the United States. The Trump Administration disabled much of the US immigration system and the Biden Administration has not yet been able to get it back up to speed. Those who won the visa lottery must obtain a visa by September 30. Under the law, no more visas for last year’s winners can be issued after that data. But as of the end of June the State Department had only processed 3 percent of the 50,000 winners and won’t be able to get the other 97 percent done by September 30.
