US says Iran hackers entered Navy computer

October 25-2013

US officials say hackers they believe are linked to the Iranian government penetrated a Navy computer network in mid-September.

It wasn’t clear why Iran would want to hack the site.  It is unclassified and handles email and the Navy and Marine Corps internal intranet.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the hacking, which has since been confirmed by many sources.  The Journal said the Navy has been upgrading its security systems to foil hackers, but hadn’t gotten to the Navy Marine Corps Intranet before the hackers struck.

The Pentagon claims it can trace the source of hacker attacks and officials said the hackers in this case were likely working on behalf of the Iranian state.

Since it was such a low level site, it is possible that the hack attack was just part of a training exercise for hackers the Iranian government is training for more meaningful attacks later.
