Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Araqchi (photo) last week criticized what he said was a US policy setting traps for innocent Iranians visiting or living in foreign countries by leveling charges of sanctions violations against them. He said Washington creates “fake” stories about their activities in order to induce foreign governments to arrest and jail them. After the arrests, Washington seeks to extradite them for trial in the United States. He didn’t explain why he thought Washington would care about arresting completely innocent travelers. He spoke shortly after the Malaysian court system refused to approve one such extradition. That Iranian has now been set free.
