Iran defeated the United States in volleyball Saturday for the first time ever. The two teams were playing in the six-team Men’s World Grand Champions Cup in Japan. The United States had defeated Iran in their three previous meetings over the years. In Cup play, Iran beat Italy 3-2, Japan 3-2 and the USA 3-2 and lost to Brazil 1-3 and Russia 0-3. Iran ended up fourth place, behind Brazil, Russia and Italy but ahead of the USA and Japan. The Cup play was comprised of the five continental champions plus host Japan.
