The number of foreign tourists visiting Iran surged 45 percent in the first half of the current Iranian year. Most of the tourists are religious pilgrims and visitors from neighboring states, many coming to take advantage of the weak rial by buying cheap goods. The number of big-spending tourists from Europe, however, fell during the period by 24 percent.
