Tehran Univ gets new chancellor

June 20-2014

Mohammad Nili-Ahmadabadi, an educator who supported President Rohani in the election campaign, has been named the new chancellor of the University of Tehran, Tehran news reportsd said.

Nili-Ahmadabadi is a graduate of Shiraz University and Tohoko University in Japan.  He currently teaches metallurgy at the University of Tehran and previously worked at Shiraz University.  He has held both academic and administrative posts.

Nili-Ahmadabadi succeeds Farhad Rahbar, who was fired a few months ago after a controversial term at the helm of the University of Tehran and many objections to his crackdown on student activists.

After Rahbar was fired, the Ministry of Science, which oversees higher education, said the faculty would elect the new chancellor.

The reports on Nili-Ahmadabadi’s appointment said nothing about any faculty votes.  But they did say that the Science Ministry’s appointment had to be ratified by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution.
