The Tehran garbage department says Iranians are a trashy people. But their numbers are bollixed up. Abolfazl Rafii said the average Tehrani generates 800 grams (1.8 pounds) of trash and garbage each day or triple what Europeans produce. So we did a little checking and found Rafii doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He missed his big chance to trash the Americans over their trash. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American generated 1.99 kilos (4.38 lbs) a day of waste each day in 2012. As for Europe, Eurostat said the average resident of the 27 members of the EU in 2007 (the most recent year for trashy stats) was 1.43 kilos (3.2 lbs.) a day. Tehran is clean.
