A male teacher in a small village in Sistan va Baluchestan province was killed this month when he rushed to save three of his pupils from a collapsing wall and was himself killed by the wall.
Hamid-Reza Gangozehi was killed and another teacher, Abdol-Raouf Shahnavazi, was injured in the wall’s collapse, according to Alireza Nakhai, the director general of the provincial education department. No students were injured.
A wall of the building next to the school had apparently been weakened by a recent heavy rainstorm and collapsed onto the school, pushing the school wall into an elementary school classroom in the village of Nukjoo near Khash.
Gangozehi and Shahnavazi apparently saw the wall as it began to bulge and rushed to shoo all the students away when the wall gave way and toppled on them.
Although the defective wall was not the school’s wall, an official handling school infrastructure in the province, Alireza Rasheki, told the Tasnim news agency that 576 schools or 56 percent of
those in the province are made of mud brick and in danger of collapse.
