The convicted Iranian, Behnam Bagheri, was identified as an ethnic Azeri. He was convicted of trying to take film out of the country that contained “anti-Armenian propaganda that could be used to discredit Armenia’s international prestige.” The actual charge against him was espionage. Bagheri’s brother, Javad, who attended the trial, told Radio Farda that the 30-year-old “spy” had attended school for only five years, made his living as a shepherd, and was arrested while he was visiting Armenia for the first time to see his girlfriend.
