Many in Iran have long questioned the supposedly close ties between the Islamic Republic and Russia.
Those doubts were further fed May 9 when no one from the Iranian leadership was invited to join President Putin in reviewing the huge parade marking the 80th anniversary of World War II.
More than two dozen foreign leaders stood with Putin, but none from Iran, despite the fact that Iran served as the conduit through which much of the aid sent to the Soviet Union passed during the war
