Slow High Speed

February 21, 2025

Iranian Railways has announced that it is launching its first ever “highspeed” train on the line between Tehran and Mashhad. There’s one problem: this high-speed train will run at a very low speed. The accepted definition of a highspeed train is that it exceed 250 kilometers per hour. But Iran Rail said the new train would take 8 hours and 20 minutes to cover the 926 kilometers between the two cities, which is an average speed of 111 kph (69 mph), which is actually pretty slow.
