Skiers reach Olympic finish line

February 21-2014

Iranian skiers aren’t exactly getting off to a great start at the winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, this year.

Iran sent five skiers to the Olympics and two have so far competed.

Sattar Seyd appeared in the 15-kilometer cross-country classic.  He finished up 79th out of 87 competitors with a time of 47 minutes and 16.1 seconds.  That placed him almost nine minutes behind the winner from Switzerland.  Still, that is much better than in the 2010 Olympics, where he finished 89th, or the 2013 World Championships, where he finished 99th.

The other cross-country skier is a woman, Farzaneh Rezasoltani, who appeared in the 10-kilometer event.  She finished 73rd of 75 competitors with a time of 42 minutes and 31.3 seconds, more than 14 minutes behind the winner from Poland.  She was also more than 10 minutes behind the Kazakhstan woman who came in 52nd.

Iran also has two men and a woman entered in Alpine skiing events.  They have not yet competed.
