SINKING

August 06, 2021

The rial is sinking in value yet again, though slowly. According to the Bonbast website, a US dollar has cost more than 255,000 rials every day since July 28.  The rial hasn’t been that weak since the first few days after Now Ruz and at one point this year you could buy a dollar for 209,500 rials.  The slippage of the rial comes as former Central Bank Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati complained that the Rohani Administration had resumed printing rials.  The government has been trying to sell bonds to get the funds to keep the government running and did reasonably well at selling bonds last year.  But since Now Ruz, hardly any bonds have been sold and Hemmati says that has driven the regime to print more paper.
