Shajarian Ramadan song killed

to signal the breaking of the fast at the end of each day during Ramadan.

The BBC reports that Shajarian’s rendering of the song Rabbana is not being played at dusk this month by state broadcasting.

The song is such a tradition that its absence has not gone unnoticed by the Iranian public.

Shajarian has cast his lot publicly with the opposition since the 2009 elections. At that time, he told state broadcasting that it could no longer use any of his music except for Rabbana. Radio and television—all state-owned—used Shajarian’s Rabbana during Ramadan of 2009 and 2010, but this year have dropped it without any explanation.

Shajarian is widely recognized as the greatest singer today of Iranian classical and traditional songs.
