The new chairman of the Expediency Council, Ayatollah Mahmud Hashemi-Shahrudi (photo), 69, who is often talked about as a possible successor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenehi, has traveled abroad for medical treatment, his son announced last week. The son did not say what the illness was or where his father had gone for treatment. All he said was that his father was “totally healthy.”
