Rial refuses to pass 22,000 to the $ just yet

The currency is now shifting in the range between 21,000 and 22,000 rials to the dollar, according to Mesghal, a website that reports on rial prices in the bazaar.

The high so far has been 21,830 rials to the dollar on last Wednesday, August 8.

The price jumped above 20,000 after the Central Bank governor, Mahmud Bahmani, announced August 5 that the bank would be setting a new official exchange rate for the dollar with 10 days.

As of press deadline Tuesday night, nine days had passed and no new official price had been announced.

The official price of 12,260 rials was set in January.  The government has been stripping away eligibility for that rate in recent weeks, so that it is used now only for essential imports like food and medicine.

One banker has said he expects the new official rate to be in the range of 15,000 to 16,000 rials to the dollar.

But an equally important question is who will be eligible to buy dollars at that rate.
