August 4 — Four teenagers, aged 13 to 16, pelted a mosque in Hayward, California, with lemons while congregants prayed inside. One person was hit by a lemon. It was the fourth attack on the mosque in eight months. All four have been arrested and charged with vandalism that interferes with civil rights.
August 5 — Wade Michael Page murdered six congregants and wounded a police officer in a shooting at a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin, possibly because he confused turban-wearing Sikhs with Muslims. Since 9/11, many Sikhs have been attacked because less-educated Americans think the turban means they are supporters of Osama bin Laden.
August 5 — A man attacked mosque property in North Smithfield, Rhode Island. A surveillance video shows the man running up to the mosque sign and head-butting it, then trying to pull it down and running away with a piece of the sign. Based on the video, a man has been arrested and police say they do not think it was a hate crime. They have not said if the man was drunk, as appears possible from the video.
August 6 — The mosque in Joplin, Missouri, which suffered minor damage in a firebomb attack last month, was burned to the ground in another firebomb attack. No one was injured.
August 7 — Two women threw pork legs on the ground at the site of proposed Islamic center in Ontario, California.
August 8 — In Detroit, Shafik Shoaib woke up to find his van had been vandalized. Six years ago, he was beaten by a group of men shouting slurs,
August 10 — Someone fired a shot from a pellet rifle at a mosque in Morton Grove, Illinois, just outside Chicago while 500 worshippers were at prayer inside. Police arrested David Conrad, 51. No one was injured but worshipers said one of the bullets flew only inches above a security guard’s head. Conrad is a neighbor and had previously spoken out against the expansion of the mosque. He is charged with four felonies.
August 12 — Attackers fired paintball guns at a mosque in Oklahoma City.
August 12 — A homemade bomb filled with acid was thrown at an Islamic school in Lombard, Illinois, while Ramadan prayers were being held inside.
August 15 — Assailants threw a Molotov cocktail at the home of a Muslim family in Panama City, Florida.
August 16 — A Muslim visiting his father’s grave in an Islamic cemetery in Evergreen, Illinois, discovered that a number of tombstones had been defaced with anti-Islamic graffiti.
August 19 — Someone scattered rashers of uncooked bacon in the early morning on a field in Staten Island, New York, that was being used later that day for an open air Eid-e Fetr service.
