The rail line will run 960 kilometers from Gonbad-e Kavoos in Iran along the eastern side of the Caspian and then link up with the old Soviet rail system. Iran links with the old Soviet system at Julfa in western Iran, but that line doesn’t function because of the dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan through which it runs. There is another juncture at Sarakhs at the far northeastern corner of Iran.
