The Iranian government has offered a free apartment to a couple in the northeast who welcomed the birth of quintuplets this month.

A statement by the Ministry of Transport said the father of the quintuplets had received keys and an ownership deed to his new apartment in a ceremony held earlier in the day in the city of Gonbad-e Kavoos, where he lives.

The father, identified as Ehsan Eghbali, is a construction worker and has two other daughters. His wife, Safoureh Habiblee, 33, gave birth to three boys and two girls this month.

The couple is from Iran’s ethnic Turkmen community. Their new babies weighed between 600 grams and 1 kilogram each at birth, according to local hospital officials.

Iran has introduced policies in recent years to encourage child birth among its population, including by offering cheap loans and mortgages to couples.
