Carlos Queiroz, the former coach of the Iranian national soccer team, went next to Colombia, which has just fired him after two horrifying losses in the Lain American qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup.
Queiroz, 67, leaves the job in the wake of a 3-0 home loss to Uruguay and an unbelievable 6-1 rout in Ecuador, Colombia’s worst defeat in four decades.
The Portuguese manager, a former assistant coach at Manchester United, arrived on the Colombia bench in February 2019, but only lasted a year-and-a-half. He was in Iran for eight years and led the team to two World Cup finals, though the team did not advance beyond the first round of the finals either time.
Colombia is now down in seventh place in the race to qualify for the 2022 World Cup from South America, with the top four teams in the region qualifying directly and the fifth facing a play-off.
Colombia, which has gone to the past two World Cups just like Iran, has won only one of its first four qualifiers—one win, a draw and two defeats.
Colombia will need to appoint a new coach by March, when it faces Paraguay.
Queiroz oversaw 18 games at the helm, winning nine, drawing five and losing four.
