Queen Liz ‘begged’ Iranians

Deputy Zohreh Elahian told the Fars news agency, “After the Majlis approved the bill to downgrade ties with Britain, the office of Queen Elizabeth contacted some Iranian officials and begged them to continue relations with Britain.”

She did not identify the Iranian officials contacted by the Queen’s staff.

On November 27, the Majlis voted to boot the British ambassador out of the country, limit diplomatic ties to the level of charge d’affaires and reduce economic and cultural ties to the minimum.

A few days later, the British embassy was raided by Basijis.  Britain then withdrew all its diplomats from Tehran and expelled all Iranian diplomats from London.

Nothing further has been said about the Majlis requirement to reduce economic and cultural ties to the undefined “minimum.”

London announced that it has arranged for Switzerland to handle British diplomatic matters in Tehran.  Switzerland already represents the United States.

Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi said “several” people are under investigation for the raid on the British embassy.  He did not say that any had been charged.
