Quake helpers in Evin

Their crime was apparanetly to bring relief aid to the quake victims on their own and not as part of the state disaster aid system.

An opposition website, the Society for the Fight against Education Discrimination, reported last Wednesday that the five were transferred from the Tabriz police detention center to Evin Prison in Tehran.

Earlier, the authorities had announced that all the volunteers detained for providing relief outside the state system had been granted bail, but the judge apparently did not agree to bail for at least these five.

Thirty-five people were arrested August 20 at a camp set up by volunteers in Sarand village in East Azerbaijan.

Two days later, all the women and three men were released on bail.

Iran’s prosecutor general confirmed the arrests and said the suspects stand accused of sabotage. It was not explained what they had sabotaged.
