Dr. Jafar Mehrad, president of the Islamic World Science Citation Center, said Iranians produced 19,559 scientific articles from January 1 through August 11 this year, according to a tabulation done by the Scopus database in Europe. He said that ranked Iran 16th, up from 17th in 2011. That is about where Iran ranks in the world in terms of population. The top five countries in the rankings are: US 282,665 articles; China 197,537; Britain 81,853; Germany 75,635; and Japan 60,556.
