with such other regional powers as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt striking out to become nuclear armed. Up to now, no one has asked the public what they think of that idea. But in February, a Turkish poll asked 1,500 Turks what they thought their country should do if Iran built a nuclear weapon. A majority of 54 percent said Turkey would then need to build its own nuclear weapon, 8 percent said Turkey should rely on NATO’s nuclear umbrella (which really means American nuclear weapons) and 35 percent said they opposed the development of Turkish nuclear weapons under any circumstances. The remaining 3 percent had no opinion.
