A 21-year-old man, AmirReza Ajam Akrami (photo), was hanged publicly in Shahrud August 26, becoming the first person to be hanged publicly in 2024, according to the Oslo-Based Iran Human Rights Organization. Akrami was convicted of murdering a lawyer in 2021. Taliban back polio: The Taliban in Afghanistan have ordered a halt to polio vaccinations. Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two countries where polio has not been eliminated.
