will not be allowed to be a candidate in the upcoming Majlis elections.
Abbas-Ali Kadkhodai, a member of the 12-man Council of Guardians and its spokesman, said, “We have a strict ban in our eligibility criteria against those who were seriously involved in the sedition.” The regime uses the term sedition to describe those who opposed the election results.
While Kadkhodai said those involved in the “sedition” could not become candidates, he did not explain how the Council of Guardians would make that judgment of involvement. He did not say only those arrested in the protests would be banned. That left open the possibility that someone not currently tabbed with the sedition label could be accused by some party of involvement in the coming weeks and then be barred from running.
Kadkhodai also said that all those holding dual citizenship would be barred from being candidates. That appeared to some to be a double standard since the Iranian government does not recognize dual citizenship.
There seemed to be a standard where dual citizenship is recognized when the regime wants to restrict eligibility for public office and not recognized when a person seeks the consular protection from his other country.
